Pre-Socratic Philosophers

The philosopher Empedocles caught my attention the most. I could relate his theory to one of my favorite movies which is “The 5th Element”. Empedocles believes that all things are composed of four primal elements: Earth, fire, wind and water. The final element will be love or hate which are active and opposing. When love is involved there is peace and tranquility but when hate gets in the middle, everything falls apart. Everyone is divided and separated until the 5th element is once again restored to love. I find these ideas compelling because I also believe that we are all united in a circle of life, in which we are all connected. We are all created through love and in this earth we are thrown, with fire we see at night, the air that keeps us alive and with water we quench our thirst. There will always be a never ending fight between love and hate.
